The Easy Guide to Cleaning Your Moccamaster Gear
Jul 23, 2026
If you love crisp, full-flavored filter coffee, chances are your Moccamaster Select 1.25L and Moccamaster KM5 Grinder are the hard-working stars of your morning routine!
To keep every cup tasting as bright and clean as the day you brought your gear home, a little light maintenance goes a long way. Coffee beans leave behind natural oils, and water leaves mineral scale, both of which can alter the flavor of your brew over time.
Here is a super simple, step-by-step guide to keep your gear fresh and performing at its best!
How to Descale & Clean Your Moccamaster Select
Cleaning your brewer isn’t just about washing the glass jug—it’s about keeping the internal copper element scale-free! We recommend doing this every 100 brews (or roughly whenever you finish a box of paper filters).
1. Wash the Removable Parts
- Disassemble the brew basket, lid, water reservoir lid, and glass carafe.
- Wash them gently in warm water with mild dish soap using a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive pads so you don't scratch the clear plastic or glass.
2. Descale the Internal System
- Avoid white vinegar—it leaves a lingering odor and can degrade internal seals!
- Instead, use a gentle, food-safe descaling solution, like the Cafetto Coffee Equipment Cleaners available here at The Coffee Collective.
- Mix your cleaning product with warm water according to its packet instructions, pour it into the water reservoir, and turn the machine on.
- Allow half of the liquid to brew into the carafe, turn the switch off for 10–15 minutes to let it break down any buildup, then switch it back on to finish.
3. Flush It Out
- Discard the used cleaning liquid.
- Fill the reservoir to the top with fresh, cold tap water and run a full cycle to flush out any remaining solution. Repeat this once more, and you’re ready to brew!
How to Clean Your Moccamaster KM5 Grinder
Freshly ground coffee is key to amazing taste, but fine coffee dust and oils accumulate inside grinder burrs. Give your KM5 a quick check-up every few weeks!
1. Wipe Down the Hopper & Grounds Container
- Turn off and unplug the grinder.
- Wipe the inside of the bean hopper with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to wipe away oil buildup. Avoid running water through the main unit!
2. Clean the Static-Reducing Spout
- The KM5 features a clever static-reducing spout that keeps grounds flowing neatly into the container.
- Gently clear away loose particles around the spout using a small, soft brush (like a dedicated coffee brush or clean pastry brush).
3. Deep Clean the Burrs (Monthly)
- Use dedicated organic grinder cleaning tablets.
- Simply pour a small capful of grinder cleaning tablets into the empty hopper and grind them through like normal coffee beans. They safely absorb lingering coffee oils and sweep away fine particles trapped in the steel burrs!
- Finish by grinding a small scoop of fresh coffee beans to purge any leftover tablet dust, toss those grounds out, and you're good to go.
That’s It!
With just a few minutes of care, your Moccamaster setup will reward you with delicious, café-quality filter coffee for years to come.
