What Actually Makes Coffee "Specialty"?

Walk into any local Kiwi café or browse our online marketplace, and you’ll see the words proudly displayed: Specialty Coffee.

But what does it actually mean? Is it just a clever marketing buzzword designed to make your morning flat white feel fancy, or is there real substance behind the bean?

Grab a mug, because we're breaking down exactly what sets specialty coffee apart in under two minutes.

The 80-Point Club 🏆

In the coffee world, "specialty" isn't a self proclaimed title, it’s a rigorous certification. Professional coffee judges (called Q Graders) evaluate green coffee beans using a strict 100 point scale developed by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA).

To earn the prestigious "specialty" badge, a coffee must score 80 points or higher.

Mass produced supermarket coffee typically scores much lower and relies on a heavy, dark roast to mask defects. Specialty coffee, on the other hand, is celebrated for its pristine quality, distinct origin characteristics, and total lack of flaws.

A Relay Race of Passion 🏃

Think of specialty coffee less like a product and more like a high stakes relay race. The baton passes through multiple dedicated hands, and a single mistake anywhere along the line can ruin the final flavor:

  1. The Farmer: Carefully nurtures the coffee trees, selectively harvesting only perfectly ripe coffee cherries by hand.
  2. The Roaster: This is where the magic happens locally. Our incredible New Zealand roasting partners use their craft to roast in small, precise batches, unlocking the specific flavor profile unique to that farm's soil and climate.
  3. The Barista (That’s You!): Armed with fresh water and quality gear, you cross the finish line by brewing it with love at home.

Why Your Tastebuds Will Thank You

When you switch to specialty coffee, you aren't just drinking caffeine, you're tasting geography. Instead of one dimensional bitterness, your palate opens up to a world of natural tasting notes.

One bag might taste like bright stone fruit and jasmine. Another might be rich with creamy dark chocolate and toasted hazelnut.
